At the beginning of August, we stayed in the Forestville Mystery Cave State Park and had the most incredible night in the tent, and toured the gorgeous natural cave. We hiked around the park which seems very large, and has a whole little "town" where people show off pioneer living type stuff. We didn't have enough time to do that tour because we had already booked our time to tour the caves, but I'd love to go back to this incredible park because it was lovely and because of their bat population, almost completely absent of mosquitoes! Huzzah! It also hosts lots of horse trails, so we had to navigate some pretty muddy areas with loads of horseshoe prints in the muck. Our night in the tent was a bit chilly because we wanted to keep the rain guard off so that we could fall asleep looking at the stars, which was really cool! John's a furnace, so he kept me warm all night! As we fell asleep, we suddenly heard a raucous cacophony of coyotes calling to each other. Twice they did this, and twice we were amazed although it was MANY times throughout the night that we both awoke to check to make sure there wasn't a canine nose sniffing us out!!

Dinner at Palmer House, yum!
An incredibly relaxing night in the Sugar Loaf Motel. Highly recommend for a cheap but clean and comfy night's stay.
Morning brekkies at the Blue Heron Coffeehouse and a hike up the Sugar Loaf hill. Stunning views of Winona.
A panorama from atop the Sugar Loaf!
Besides Decorah, Iowa, I think Winona is so far my second-loved little
town that I could see us living in. There were winding roads with miles
and miles of the most charming little properties you ever did see!
Next stop: Rochester, MN for a game of vintage baseball with the Rochester Roosters! Cost: Two Bits! Vintage baseball is just an all-around good time. It's cheap, fun, outdoors and I was thrilled to see that women play, too! We had so much fun :)
