We ventured out into the perfect, cool evening to get some dinner and check out a new to us band, a Scottish band called Dàimh. We shared some fish and chips at a funky punk rock sort of pub that really reminded me of The Driftwood Char Bar back home. They had punk music cranked and Xmas lights all over the ceiling for mood lighting, and a covered garden patio that felt more like a little greenhouse for tippling. We enjoyed a leisurely dinner and talking hockey with our wait guy, as they turned off the music to watch the end of the Bruins vs the Panthers game, which turned in Vancouver’s favor in overtime, so the whole place was happy and hooting madly!
We then strolled over to the venue, which was a cool church converted into a community center for musical performances. They were also hosting a huge AA meeting in the basement. The place was quite large and we thought a really awesome use of the space! The band was really amazing! They had a guitarist, an incredible fiddler, a guy who played amazing bagpipes, uilleann pipes, and two kinds of flute or whistle one of which was really low in tone, a guy who played the accordion and some kind of mandolin instrument, called a mandola, and a woman who sang truly beautifully in Scots Gallic, which embodied the feeling of the Scottish landscapes very poignantly.
It was a fun and foot stomping great time! The whole place was clapping heartily along and stamping their feet, which on those old wood floors made it absolutely thunderous! We bought one of their CDs and then a cool tea towel that came with a code to access their new album, so we are excited to have some new Scottish music to enjoy at home! We then had a swift and safe ride home with a very nice and chatty Lyft driver and got to see how lit up the city gets on a nice cool night.
