Day 3 was actually May 1.
We enjoyed a nice morning cuppa and got ourselves all ready to go by 9 o’clock this morning so we could catch a morning Aquabus (adorable little water taxi’s) over to Granville Island & Market. This market is incredible and a wonder for all the senses, so many awesome vendors! We had delightful breakfast sandwiches and freshly made tropical juice at the market, then wandered around shopping a bit before our whale watching tour with the Prince of Whales tour!
It was a five hour tour, and they cruised around the many little island spots where the whale pods had reportedly been spotted. Apparently, there are many types of whales and porpoises that can be found in the bay, and I was amazed that so many pass through here, but I keep forgetting that we are sitting on the Pacific Ocean! Since we are so nestled into the bay, it doesn’t have that same expansive feeling as when we’ve stayed in California. They get orcas (killer whales), humpback, grey whale, minke whale, porpoises, dolphins, seals and sea lions!
The tour was to be 5 hours long, and in our opinion that was a couple of hours too long as we and others were getting a bit green around the gills, but that may have been because we spent the majority of the tour going at very high speed as well as having very choppy waves. We slowed down only three times during the entire journey, so it was a relief to walk on land again.
Despite searching high and low for whales, we saw none. Apparently the orcas can travel so quickly that even them having had reports of whales two hours prior, they can move locations so fast that they are harder to track. But we did get to see an adorable colony of harbor seals, and then a larger colony of hilariously cute sea lions! There were two kinds of sea lions, the California and Stellar. They were so funny groaning, howling, grunting and some even sounding like they were belching! We have video so you can hear how funny they were!
Here are some photos of the amazing animals and scenery, as well as some scenes from our cute little Aquabus, and one of the driver on his unusual looking drivers seat! The photos will be a bit out of order because I’m including the ones from John’s camera after mine and he got great close ups of the seals and sea lions!
