Village Dean, Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile, Bakehouse Close, The World’s End, The Toy Dolls!

We walked down to the charming little neighborhood of Dean Village Thursday morning, which is a tangle of cobbled streets that wind all around a beautiful flowing creek and has such picturesque homes that I think if I were to come again, I’d like to see about an AirBnb overlooking the babbling creek. There are a couple of bridges overlooking the creek providing the best backdrop for a Schmoopie-selfie!

As we tried to find our way out of Dean Village, I not only had a quickly filling bladder and was getting desperate to find a public loo, I got a bloody nose that took a full 15 or so minutes to staunch! With these two immediate discomforts, I was trying not to be annoyed, but you know how that goes. So I just embraced the discomfort and we stopped walking so I could ease pumping so much blood! As it began to taper off, we wandered back to the main city center (after a few wrong turns and double-backs) and found a bistro where I was able to deal with my bodily functions and John got us a raspberry danish.

We then made our way to Edinburgh Castle, which is an impressively built structure perched atop an old volcano! The coarse, craggy, black rock it sits upon is beautiful and imposing, and the castle is built astonishingly close to the edges. After the shin-splinting walk to the gates, we found out they only allow a certain amount of tickets each day and they were all booked up. We may try to get tickets for Saturday, but we may also take a walking tour or something else that day.

Next we meandered the The Royal Mile which is just a hop, skip, jump away from our lodgings. It is crowded with tourists and touristy shops, all seeking tartan, woolens and cashmere. If I bring home anything, I may invest in a really nice woolen hooded poncho or duster or something. But wool is also very heavy, and I’ve been so warm the whole trip, while everyone else is wearing raincoats and some folks even parkas (!) I’ve barely covered my arms! It’s absolutely perfect weather, being sunny and in the 50s/60s. We only got caught in one brief rain so far.

Along the Royal Mile is Bakehouse Close, a little walkway that was featured in the show Outlander where Jamie Frazier has his prints shop, and is one of the best parts of the show. We geeked out here for a while!

Next up, lunch at The World’s End Pub! This pub, at least in name, was featured in a fun flick by Simon Pegg. This pub itself wasn’t featured, but still, we ate at The World’s Pub! It was delicious and tiny, so if you’re ever here, get in early!

After a lovely nap and another walk, and then dinner of leftovers from the pub, later in the evening, we made our way to La Belle Angele club to see one of our favorite bands from the early 80s, The Toy Dolls! We were giddy as anything to finally see these guys, who as far as we know haven’t been to the US since the 80s, so we built this trip around their tour date! They were one of funnest most incredible shows we’ve seen!!!!
